Scientists Identify 'Clean-Up' Snafu that Kills Brain Cells in Parkinson's Disease
Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo has discovered why toxic clumps of proteins accumulate in brain cells of those with a familial form of Parkinson's disease.


Nature interviewed Lawrence Brandt, M.D., about the first randomized clinical trial on using fecal transplants to treat recurring infections of Clostridium difficile, a bacterium that causes severe diarrhea. While the standard antibiotic treatment cured 27% of patients in the trial, fecal transplants cured 94%. Dr. Brandt, professor of medicine and of surgery at Einstein and emeritus chief of gastroenterology at Montefiore Medical Center, leads a blinded trial in which patients are treated with their own feces or those from healthy donors. Wolkoff Receives Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award
Dr. Allan Wolkoff, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases at Einstein and Montefiore, and Professor of Medicine and Anatomy & Structural Biology at Einstein, received the 2012 Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Liver Foundation. This award is among the Foundation’s most prestigious honors and recognizes a scientist who has made a major contribution to the study of liver pathobiology and the prevention, treatment, or cure of liver disease.

An abstract co-authored by Dr. Lawrence Brandt and chief resident Dr. Olga Aroniadis (Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases) and submitted for presentation to the American College of Gastroenterology at its annual meeting won one of the five Governors' Awards for Excellence in Clinical Research. Dr. Paul Gaglio (Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases) was honored by the American Liver Foundation Greater New York Division on September 27th at its annual gala. Founded in 1997, the American Liver Foundation Greater New York Division serves New York State and Northeastern New Jersey, providing services including support groups, liver wellness education programs, a national helpline, fundraising events, and volunteer opportunities.
