Internal Medicine residents and senior medical students have the opportunity to engage in a rigorous educational experience, supervised by experienced Montefiore Global Health faculty, while learning with and from our partners across the Kisoro district health system. The mission of this program is to provide service through education, within a mutually respectful and reciprocal partnership. Over the past two decades, this collaboration has led to the development of multiple health initiatives, including the Kisoro Village Health Worker Program and the Chronic Care Clinic—the only primary care clinic providing continuity of care in a public hospital setting in southwest Uganda—which now serves more than 1,500 active patients. Before traveling to Uganda, residents complete a required four-week comprehensive global health course at the end of their PGY-2 year. The course emphasizes clinical reasoning in low-resource settings, public health, and the structural drivers of global health inequities. During their PGY-3 year, residents travel to Uganda for a four-week rotation working alongside Ugandan clinicians. Under the supervision of Montefiore and Kisoro Internal Medicine faculty, they provide health services at both the hospital and Health Center III levels, and accompany Village Health Workers during community outreaches. This rotation offers a unique opportunity to strengthen clinical skills while delivering needed health services with a focus on history, physical examination, and knowledge of local epidemiology. Additionally, the close collaboration with our Kisoro partners provides residents with an immersive cultural experience and deeper understanding of global health practice.
