Meet Our Residents: PGY4

Lauren Cosgriff, M.D.

MD:  University of Maryland

BSE:  University of Pennsylvania

I knew immediately that Montefiore was where I wanted train. I really feel that the residents and faculty at Montefiore are here with the conscious intention of making a difference in the lives of our patients. It's a rewarding experience being able to work hard alongside people who have also chosen the program for the high acuity and diverse patient population of the Bronx.

Camilla Dagum, M.D.

MD:  Stony Brook University

BS:  Cornell University

I chose Montefiore because I wanted a program with excellent clinical experience as well as academics. I'm writing this as an intern, but already I can say I've had the opportunity to do and learn even more than I expected. Working with an underserved patient population is another benefit of this program. I feel that I really make a difference in people's lives, and it's such a privilege to be their doctor.

Alexander Fife, M.D.

MD:  University of North Dakota

BS:  University of Wisconsin

Montefiore was the only place I ever wanted to be for residency. It will allow me to train with a highly diverse, high acuity patient base where I will learn to not only address my patient's medical issues, but also the social factors contributing to their health. Montefiore allows me to cater to this population in an academic center that will train me to be a generalist as well as preparing me for any fellowship that I could choose to go into. After training at Montefiore I feel I will be prepared to work anywhere.

Divya Gowthaman, M.D.

MD:  University of Southern California

BA:  University of Southern California

There was no other program I could see myself training at for residency other than Montefiore. With its broad research opportunities, rigorous training in high-acuity cases, care for a diverse patient population, and strong emphasis on advocacy, I knew that I would have the opportunity to develop the appropriate skills to become a well-trained physician.  I strongly share the program’s vision and commitment to advancing health equity by addressing social and economic barriers that prevent access to care.

Avonelle Henry, M.D.

MD:  Loma Linda University

BS:  Andrews University via University of Southern Caribbean

In deciding on a program, I wanted to train at a fast paced institution with a variety of people to serve and a variety of people to train alongside. I have no doubt that my Montefiore experience will make me the compassionate, capable and competent OBGYN I want to be!

Meaghan Jain, M.D.

MD:  Columbia University

BA:  Union College

I chose Montefiore for its unparalleled training and diversity. Having only spent a few months here so far, I know that by the end of residency, I will be ready for whatever comes my way, whether that be as a generalist or continuing my training in fellowship. Additionally, the diversity of our Bronx population is excellent for learning to provide adaptive, culturally sensitive care.

Nicole Massad, M.D.

MD:  Albert Einstein College of Medicine

BA:  Vassar College

I chose to stay at Einstein/Montefiore for residency because I knew as a medical student here that I had found my people. With residents, fellows, and attendings who value social justice, actively engage in advocacy, and work tirelessly to combat healthcare disparities, I did not have to think twice about my choice. I am happy to be working in a diverse community where I can speak my other native language on an almost daily basis and to be at a program that views resident and faculty diversity as a necessity to providing patient-centered care in the Bronx. At Montefiore, I do not have to decide between receiving excellent surgical training and practicing social medicine.

Emma Chew Murphy, M.D.

MD:  Mount Sinai

BA:  University of Virginia

I chose Montefiore for its unique commitment to social medicine in the Bronx, including the opportunity to train with a specific focus in the Social Ob/Gyn track. When interviewing for residency, I sought a program that would equip me to offer the highest quality of care to marginalized communities, including  immigrant, low-income, and women of color. I am excited by the strength of Monte’s training in the full spectrum of Ob/Gyn, including abortion and family planning, and am honored to have the opportunity to work alongside patients in the Bronx, who bring an incredible diversity of contexts and experiences.

Kathryn Rose Saturnino, M.D.

MD:  Albert Einstein College of Medicine

BS:  SUNY at Binghamton

I chose Montefiore because it is a program that values quality, evidence-based care and academic learning with a focus on social justice. Everyone here is committed to making a difference in the lives of our patients, which is really inspiring. I’m confident that my training will allow me to continue growing into the competent and compassionate clinician and surgeon I hope to be, and I am very thankful to be in a strong culture of teaching, learning, and camaraderie among my co-residents and mentors.

Morit Segui, M.D.

MD:  Rutgers New Jersey

BA:  Cornell University

In choosing a residency program, the most important aspects for me were, first, the community I would be serving, then, the program's dedication to education and mentorship, and finally a collegial and friendly environment. Montefiore had all of these components and more. I chose this residency program because I knew it would train me to be the best generalist I can be, with its high volume and high acuity and diverse patient population. I also felt that the attendings and residents at Montefiore were amongst the most diverse group of people I had met on the interview trail, and were friendly with one another. I feel lucky to be part of this group of hard working residents focused on addressing both health and its social determinants for the women in the Bronx.

Megan Yanik, M.D.

MD:  University of Michigan

BS:  University of Notre Dame

Montefiore was my top choice for residency because of the commitment of the institution, faculty, residents, and staff to understanding and addressing socioeconomic and sociocultural determinants that impact women’s health. I wanted to be around like minded individuals who were committed to advocating for human rights and reproductive justice in the community. The diversity of culture and of complex pathology seen at Montefiore is truly rich, and it is an honor to train here and learn from our patients each day.
