Any travel outside the United States raises potential export control concerns because all items the travelers take with them are being “exported.”
Before traveling, please ensure:
- Any information you are traveling with is publicly available, in the public domain, is educational information, or qualifies for the fundamental research exclusion.
- Any information that is controlled or proprietary or subject to a non-disclosure or confidentiality agreement is removed from your devices.
- Your Einstein-issued devices are free of proprietary information, special software, or encryption not put on a laptop by its manufacturer that may require a license for export.
Of particular concern is any travel to an embargoed country, which is high-risk (both from a sanctions and safety perspective) and should be reviewed in advance by the Office of General Counsel. As of December 2025, these embargoed countries are:
Cuba
Iran
North Korea
Syria
Russia
Belarus
Crimea, the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, and the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic regions of Ukraine
