The transition to new chairs of Molecular Pharmacology and Biochemistry will be taking place soon.

As part of the transition to the new Einstein, the Chartis group is consulting with the Einstein community to develop a strategic plan. A group of 8 chairs has been appointed to work closely with them, and input from all stakeholders is welcome. The chairs are Roy Chuck, Judy Aschner, Rob Michler, Roman Perez-Soler, Jan Vijg, John Condeelis, Kamran Khodakhah and Vern Schramm.

A task force on revising medical education will be initiating a full review of medical education at Einstein. The current trend is for reducing the length of the basic science curriculum to provide more flexibility during the fourth year and for enabling more research projects.

Email addresses will retain the yu designation until Einstein receives degree granting designation.

The chair selection process for chair of Medicine is close to deciding on a final candidate.

The tenure process was discussed. For all applicants, the 50% salary support under the NIH cap for 3 years criterion is not the only criterion – full academic evaluation will be performed. For Associate Professors applying for promotion to Professor with tenure, the process will go through CAP. For full Professors, an ad hoc committee has been convened. 12 – 13 full Professors seem to meet the funding criteria and will be evaluated. Chairs can propose candidates but the candidates must fit the funding criteria. The judgements of the committees are then subject to approval by the Dean, the provost, and YU Board of Trustees and Einstein Board of Overseers. The goal is to have all who meet the criteria be evaluated this academic year.

The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
Speaker, Einstein Senate
