The 2019 Council was introduced, and the general function of the council was summarized as an advice and consent body that provides an opportunity for perspectives that can complement those coming through the standard departmental structure. In addition providing responses to recent events, the Council has the opportunity to provide systematic and strategic advice.

Scheduling Council and Senate meetings was discussed, and the group preferred that the meetings remain on Wednesdays at their normal times. In cases when the Dean is not in town, it was suggested that Ed Burn could stand in both at Senate and Council meetings.

Topic for next Council meeting: inclusion of Assistant and Associate Professors in the Council

For developing a more systematic/strategic perspective it was proposed that the Council receive 15 minute updates on components of key mission areas, with one update per meeting. Suggested topics for updates include (in no particular order):

  • Typical medical student path at Einstein (typical post graduate path also?)
  • Tenure policy update – data regarding process and results since implementation of the new policy, both promotion and also salary reduction, opportunities for refinement of policy
  • IACUC process and challenges
  • IRB process
  • Grant support functions
  • Research path for clinician researchers at Montefiore, flexibility of chairs to adjust lines without loss, support, tenure
  • Onboarding process (TB, background check, check list)
  • Bioethics program (Tia Powell)
  • Internal Awards process with access to recurring awards and lists of selected candidates
  • NIH standards for rigor, responsibility and reproducibility
  • Conflict of interest committee
  • Strong programs at Montefiore: e.g., aids center, addiction center Philanthropy and commercialization

The meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
Speaker, Einstein Senate
