Increasing Sleep Health Literacy in Head Start: A Social-Ecological Approach is a 5-year NIH-funded study, which began in June 2015. The aim of this project is to empower families in early childhood programs with the knowledge and skills needed to obtain healthy sleep via interpersonal, organizational, community and policy level interventions.
Young children need 10-13 hours of sleep each day to learn and grow their best. Yet, 25% to 50% of preschool-aged children do not get enough sound sleep. The preschool years are a key time for creating good sleep habits. Several New York Head Start sites are part of this project to promote healthy sleep in preschool children, their families, and Head Start staff. Sleep is important for your child's health, development, and school readiness skills.
