Echocardiography equipment includes state-of-the-art Phillips systems with availability for emergency imaging performed 24 hours a day.
The Montefiore Einstein system has 3 laboratories providing comprehensive echocardiographic services. Laboratories are located at Montefiore Medical Center, Weiler Hospital (Einstein), and Jacobi Medical Center. All are fully equipped to perform transthoracic and transesophageal (TEE) studies.
A total of 12 ultrasound units are in routine use (with 2 additional units dedicated to research protocols). Both MMC and AECOM catheterization laboratories are equipped with intravascular ultrasound units, frequently utilized during interventional procedures. The acquired images are interpreted by the invasive cardiologists, often in collaboration with an echocardiologist. Collaborative echocardiography is also a part of the protocol for the performance of balloon mitral commissurotomies.
Annual echocardiographic procedural volume is approximately 21,000, including more than 12,000 transthoracic studies and 1,000 TEEs annually. These studies are supervised by the attending physicians, exercise physiologists/physician assistants, and trainees. Fellows participate in the interpretation of the study results.
