Educational Purpose

 

The educational purpose is detailed in depth in year 3, month 2.

Special procedures, such as TEE would require 100 procedures and stress echocardiography (250 interpretations). Although some experience in special procedures was attained as a part of Level 2 training, in most instances, full competence in these areas would likely require the equivalent of level 3 training.

Topics Covered: Sentinel Medical Knowledge and Patient Care Skills 

  • recap all material detailed in years 1-3
  • post-MI complications such as VSD, Flail MV, pseudoaneurysm and true aneurysm
  • stress echocardiography including viability
  • TEE including intraoperative echo
  • routine use of real-time 3D echocardiography (RT3DE)

Clinical Encounter Experiences 

  • patients with acute MI
  • patients with decompensated CHF
  • patients with stable angina pectoris
  • patients undergoing cardiac surgery
  • patients with complex congenital abnormalities including Fallot’s Tetralogy, transposition, repaired congenital heart disease (Mustard, Senning, Waterston)

Teaching Methods 

Teaching methods are detailed in year 3, month 2.

Fellows pursue advanced-level bedside training in TEE as described in year 3, month 2.

Fellows participate in teaching conferences as described in year 2, month 3.

Procedure Types Performed 

Fellows perform a complete transthoracic echocardiography exam, stress echos, and transesophageal echo as detailed in procedure types, year 2, month 3.

Fellows perform service types as detailed in year 3, month 2.
