Montefiore Einstein Interventional Cardiology Research

With 9 diverse yet fully integrated adult cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories between 2 campuses, faculty research investigators with unparalleled expertise, and over 5,000patients seen each year, the Montefiore Einstein Interventional Cardiology Service conducts extensive research activity, including investigator-initiated studies, industry-sponsored clinical trials, and participation in national registries.

Over the past 20 years, research faculty and fellowship trainees have carried out over 25 research studies. Query: is this figure correct? It seems low given the number of current investigations. Montefiore Einstein’s notable success in conducting groundbreaking interventional cardiology research studies is due to a number of factors, including:

  • widely diverse patient population
  • track record of success in recruiting women and minorities into research studies
  • investigations conducted according to the highest ethical and clinical standards
  • opportunities to collaborate with investigators in numerous subspecialties, including Montefiore Einstein’s world-class epidemiology public health, and cardiovascular experts

Racial and Ethnic Factors in Response to Treatment
Montefiore Einstein researchers are evaluating whether race- and ethnicity-based biological disparities in African American and Hispanic patients account for differences in response to pharmaceutical therapies. Montefiore Einstein is one of 15 national centers participating in this NHLBI-sponsored study.

Vascular Imaging Technologies
Montefiore Einstein investigators evaluated coronary artery imaging using optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT uses infrared light delivered via a fiberoptic catheter to produce high-resolution, cross-sectional images of blood vessels (50 microns vs. the standard 200-300), OCT enables visualization of previously indetectable elements (e.g., macrophages).
