David Greenwald, MDDr. David Greenwald, Professor of Clinical Medicine (Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases) recently received the William Carey Award at the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
Dr. Greenwald is Director of the Montefiore Einstein Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. He is interested in capsule endoscopy for various disease states including obscure and occult GI bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease and abdominal pain. He also studies the risks of infection and issues of safety concerning GI endoscopy.
Dr. Greenwald is a past president of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE), and currently serves as that organization’s Education Director. He was Governor of the Southern New York region for the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) from 2006 to 2010, and in 2010, he became Chairman of the ACG Board of Governors. He is currently a Trustee for the American College of Gastroenterology. He has been active in many committees of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), including Technology Assessment, Training, Infection Control, Public Relations, Membership and Quality. In 2010, he became Chairman of the ASGE Public and Member Outreach Committee. He has had a similarly active role in ACG Committees, including Patient Care, Membership and Nominations. He served for many years as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on GI Endoscopy for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). He was recognized by the ASGE with a Master Endoscopist Award in 2006, and by the ACG with the Governor’s Award in 2008. Dr. Greenwald graduated with a BA degree from Wesleyan University, attended medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed a residency in internal medicine, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship, at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.
The William Carey Award is given annually to an exceptional individual who has served the Board and the American College of Gastroenterology with distinction. Nominees demonstrate outstanding contribution to the ACG through leadership positions, committee service, and participation in educational efforts and research-related activities. Dr. William D. Carey was elected ACG Governor for Northern Ohio in 1987 and served as Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1988 to 1990. He served the ACG as Treasurer and Trustee, and chaired numerous Committees. Dr. Carey was the first Chairman of the Board of Governors to be elected as President of the American College of Gastroenterology in 1993. The award given in his name honors his years of distinguished service and the example he set for other Governors.
