About the Department

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Health System/Albert Einstein College of Medicine is centered on providing comprehensive health care to women and is recognized nationally and internationally for our clinical, education and research achievements focused on improving patient outcomes. Our department of over 100 faculty and 375 staff are providing clinical care and training to the next generation of physicians at multiple ambulatory and inpatient facilities throughout the Bronx and Westchester communities. We provide a robust training program for our medical students, residents and fellows. Previous trainees and faculty in the department have attained recognition in medical schools throughout the country, including serving as Chairs.

Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S. is the Seventh Department Chair. The previous Department Chairs include: Morris Glass, MD (1955-1957), Seymour Romney, MD (1957-1972), Harold Schulman, MD (1972-1980), Irwin Kaiser, MD (1980-1982), Irwin Merkatz, MD (1982-2015), Sharmila Makhija, MD, MBA (2015-2023).
