Program Description
The Department of Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center offers one (1) ACGME approved fellowship position in Women’s Health Pathology. The one-year program, based at Montefiore Medical Center/Weiler Division, on the campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, draws diagnostic material from the three hospital divisions of the Medical Center (1,500 beds) as well as a large ambulatory network. The Weiler Division of Surgical Pathology has particularly rich resources in the field of gynecologic pathology owing to busy clinical gynecologic and gynecologic oncologic services, including an accredited and academically motivated Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program. The diversity of the specimens enables the fellow to have in-depth exposure to and comprehensive training in gynecologic, breast and perinatal pathology, with 10,200 gynecologic specimens per year (including 150 consult cases), more than 4,250 breast specimens per year (including 300 consult cases), and about 3,050 perinatal specimens per year in the Department of Pathology, respectively.
Upon completing the fellowship, the fellow will be prepared and ready to assume the role of a subspecialty consultant in Gynecologic & Breast Pathology in both academic and/or private practice. The training includes signing-out of cases with faculty, involvement in intraoperative gross examinations and frozen section decisions, participation in the intra-departmental and inter-departmental consensus and didactic conferences, journal clubs, and teaching of pathology residents and medical students. Fellows are encouraged to participate in the departmental quality assurance procedures, as well as clinically relevant research, and are mentored throughout the academic year towards completion of these projects. The fellowship program is staffed by eight (8) subspecialized surgical pathologists with expertise in the areas of Gynecologic Pathology, Breast Pathology, and Perinatal Pathology, who form the core of the subspecialty faculty for Women's Health Pathology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center.
Responsibilities of the fellow include:
- in-depth work-up of both in-house and consult cases.
- supervisor/consultant duties to pathology residents.
- pathology service liaison to the clincal/surgical services.
- prepare and present at weekly breast and gynecological interdepartmental tumor boards and neonatal/perinatal conferences.
- presentations at various didactic conferences both within and outside the Department of Pathology, for pathology residents, residents in OB-Gyn and medical students.
- development of an in-depth understanding of the role of cytology in gynecologic cancer screening/diagnosis through regular interactions with the Division of Cytology.
- participation in scholarly research activities.
