Director Elizabeth Chuang published a paper in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care "Postponing it Any Later Would not be so Great’: A Cognitive Interview Study of How Physicians Decide to Initiate Goals of Care Discussions in the Hospital." Patients facing the end of life in the hospital setting often receive care that is misaligned with their goals, preferences and values. This is a significant ethical breach. This study explored physicians’ mental models of serious illness discussions and provides new insights into barriers to communication about goals and values and strategies to overcome them.
