Dr. John McAuliffe is a surgeon-scientist in the Department of Surgery. He joined the Montefiore-Einstein surgical oncology team in 2016. He recieved an MD/PhD degree at UT Houston and MD Anderson.  He then went to UAB for surgical training followed by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for surgical oncology fellowship.

His clinical practice includes Pancreatic, Biliary, Neuroendocrine, Thyroid, and Adrenal benign and malignant diseases.

His laboratory focuses on the mechanisms of metastasis in pancreatic adenocarcinoma and Tie2 signaling.   He utilizes transgenic mouse models, cell culture, human samples, and intravital microscopy to evaluate tumor associated macrophage and cancer cell signaling through Tie2 in cancer cell invasion, migration, intravasation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, stemness, and dormancy in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.  Dr. McAuliffe has observed TMEM doorways in human and mouse pancreatic cancer.  Dr. McAuliffe's laboratory seeks to better understand the mechanisms underlying pancreas cancer metastasis with the ultimate goal of translation to clinical trial.

He has recieved funding from the National Cancer Institute, the Nikki Mitchell Foundation and Pancreas Club, and Deciphera Therapeutics, the Department of Defense, Gilead Research Scholars, and The Evelyn Lipper Charitable Foundation.  He collaborates with leaders in the field including Ben Z. Stanger, Sunil Hingorani, John Condeelis, Nicole Panarelli, Maja Oktay, David Entenberg, and Claudia Gravekamp.

Dr. McAuliffe is also Co-PI and Director of Surgical Faculty Advisors for the Montefiore-Einstein Department of Surgery T32 Fellowship "Training Surgeons in Basic and Translational Research."

His clinical research focuses on outcomes of gallbladder disease, and calcium metabolism disparity.
