My career has been focused on psychiatric education for medical students and for psychiatric and medical residents. My choice of education was a consequence of being awarded a National Institute Mental Health Career Teaching Fellowship early in my career. The Fellowship allowed me to spend two years observing the process of psychiatric education in many settings.

I graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude and Harvard Medical School cum laud and then did a medical internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After my internship, I came to the Einstein psychiatric residency and I have remained here for the rest of my career. I carry the rank of Clinical Professor.

During my tenure as full-time faculty member, I was head of the consultation- liaison service and eventually became Director of Psychiatric Education for medical students and residents as well as non-psychiatric trainees. I served on the curriculum, admissions, promotions and student evaluation committees. I was also chosen to be the first Chairman of the Leo Davidoff Teaching Award Committee.  Given my expertise in education, I was invited to participate in exam development for the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Prite, and the National Board of Psychiatry and Neurology exams (parts I and II). While at the national boards, I developed the audio vignette question now used in the part I exam.

A founding member of the Association of Academic Psychiatry, I received as “Psychiatric Educator of the Year “ award in 1994. I now serve on the Education Committee of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and was given the title of Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

In addition to Psychiatric Education I have broad interest in psychiatric topics including the interview, terminal illness, sexuality, consultation -liaison, suicide, the impaired clinician and psychopharmacology.  My presentations and papers reflect these interests.

I'm currently a part-time faculty member supervising’s PGY III’s and IV’s, conducting case conferences, and teaching addiction and forensic fellows. I have a private practice and do forensic work
