Point of Reference — While the term “well-woman” may seem self-explanatory, it actually has a distinct definition. A researcher from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), seeking information on the origin of the term, recently contacted the D. Samuel Gottesman Library reference department to inquire about early use of the term in a 1941 issue of the New York State Journal of Medicine. Our library staff provided the following quote: “Already in our clinic a limited well-woman clinic has been started for the purpose of semiannual breast and pelvic examinations.” The reference will be included in an upcoming edition of the OED, noting that, the term “well-woman” refers to a type of clinic that specializes in preventative healthcare for women, offering services such as screenings and health education.
