Professional Interests

Daniel Joseph da Costa, MD, is Assistant Professor, Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus is on the diagnosis, treatment, and palliation of benign and malignant pulmonary and pleural space disease. Techniques include robotic bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, tumor ablation, stent placement, thoracoscopy and indwelling pleural catheter placement.

 

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in biology at the State University of New York at Albany in 2010, Dr. da Costa earned his Doctor of Medicine from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School – UMDNJ in 2014. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in 2017, followed by a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the same institution, which he completed in 2020. Following this, Dr. da Costa completed an interventional pulmonary fellowship at New York University in 2021.

 

Building on his clinical focus, Dr. da Costa’s research focuses on novel tools to improve bronchoscopy diagnostics and therapeutics for lung cancer. Some examples of his research include a project assessing microbiome in pleural effusions of patients who had PleurX catheters placed, a project assessing outcomes of tunneled indwelling pleural catheters for malignant pleural effusions in patients with socioeconomic disparities and a project assessing the appropriateness of ICU days for patients. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, and he has given presentations nationwide.

 

Dr. da Costa is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, and by the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology in Interventional Pulmonology
