Joel Zonszein, M.D., C.D.E., F.A.C.E., F.A.C.P.
Dr. Joel Zonszein is the Director of the DiabetesCenter at the UniversityHospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a Division of Montefiore Medical Center. He is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Zonszein was born in México City and graduated from the "Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México" (U.N.A.M.). He trained in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and Jacobi - Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in the Bronx, NY. His fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism was at NorthwesternUniversity, Chicago, Illinois and Georgetown University, WashingtonD.C. Dr. Zonszein is certified by the American Boards of “Internal Medicine", "Endocrinology and Metabolism", and "Nuclear Medicine". He has been a faculty member at Einstein since returning to New York in 1980.
He headed the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the BronxLebanonHospitalCenter, Bronx, NY, and in 1993 moved full time to Einstein to develop the ClinicalDiabetesCenter at MontefioreMedicalCenter. He is a co-investigator in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Diabetes Research Center and collaborated in landmark NIH clinically trials such as the Diabetes Control and Complication Trial (DCCT), and the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). He is the principal investigator of the "Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation 2 Diabetes" (BARI2D) an ongoing NIH sponsored study to elucidate the best management of ischemic coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. He has ample clinical experience particularly in the area of diabetes with a special interest in understanding cardiovascular disease in individuals with diabetes and or the metabolic syndrome. He developed several programs for diabetes care delivery systems with focus on the underserved minority populations. He participates as a faculty member in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) and a co-investigator and Scientific Director of the BronxCenter to Reduce and Eliminate Ethnic and Racial Health Disparities (BxCREED), supported by the NIH.
In 2006 Dr. Zonszein procured the New York State Department of Health award as Montefiore Diabetes Center of Excellence in order to promote best practices for women with Gestational Diabetes and identify family members for diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
