Medical Translation — On Friday, December 9, 2011, the Einstein-Montefiore Institute for Clinical & Translational Research hosted "Translating Clinical Research into Better Health." The event featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Philip Greenland, the Harry W. Dingman Professor and senior associate dean for clinical and translational research at Northwestern University School of Medicine. The lecture was held in Montefiore Medical Center's Cherkasky Auditorium.

Student Spotlight
Continued Growth — The BODY (Bronx, Obesity, Diabetes and You) Club applied for and received a $5,000 grant from the AMA Foundation for its community garden project. The money will help the student-run group create a new community garden on grounds provided by Einstein and Weiler Hospital. The BODY Community Garden will offer the local community a place to plant and cultivate vegetables and herbs, enjoy a picnic, wander through a butterfly garden or along walking paths, or meditate and do exercises.

Hearty Device — Dr. Simon Maybaum has positioned Montefiore as one of the first institutions in the United States to participate in a clinical trial to determine the safety and efficacy of an implantable electrical stimulation device designed to improve heart function in patients with heart failure. As an investigator involved with the INOVATE-HF Study, he will evaluate the device’s ability to reduce hospitalization and death among patients with congestive heart failure, while also exploring whether combined treatment with the implantable device and prescription drug therapy is more effective than drug therapy alone. Dr. Maybaum is associate professor of clinical medicine.

Hail to the Chief — On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, the UJA-Federation of New York honored Montefiore Medical Center president and chief executive officer Dr. Steven Safyer (Class of 1982) for his medical leadership and achievements during the organization’s annual reception at the Grand Hall of the Tishman Learning Center at Montefiore. Dr. Safyer also is professor of medicine and of epidemiology & population health at Einstein.
