Albert Einstein College of Medicine provides resources and guidance for the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which in response to prompts, can produce new content such as summaries, images, code, or data.
Einstein recognizes the potential for AI to transform how education, research, and patient care are conducted and managed. We support researchers, educators, students, and administrative staff who wish to explore how AI can drive innovation in science and medicine, while ensuring secure, legal, and ethical use of generative AI tools.
Einstein-Approved Generative AI Tools
Einstein offers access to two institutionally approved generative AI tools:
- OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu
- Microsoft’s CoPilot
Using these enterprise tools ensures that any data included in a prompt or product generated by the tool is not shared outside of Einstein. Only users with confirmed, licensed access benefit from this protection. All full-time students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty on the Einstein payroll, as well as select members of the Einstein administration, have access to these tools.
Request Access
All eligible generative AI users at Einstein will receive an email with instructions on how to register for institutional access to the AI tools. If you do not have access to institutionally approved AI tools at Einstein, you can request access by submitting a service request.
API Access
Principal investigators who want to use an application programming interface (API) with OpenAI ChatGPT Edu should submit a service request. Additional fees apply to use this feature.
User Responsibilities for Generative AI
If you are interested in engaging with generative AI for education, research, patient care, or operations, please be aware that any use of generative AI tools for institutional purposes must be in full compliance with existing policies and the law. Individual users are responsible for the following:
- ensuring compliance with all applicable institutional policies, contractual obligations, and regulatory requirements, including privacy, security, and research oversight
- maintaining meaningful human oversight, including review of AI-generated outputs for accuracy, bias, completeness, and appropriateness before reliance or dissemination
- not relying on AI tools to replace professional judgment or required approvals
- adhering to the prohibition of entering protected health information (PHI) or personally identifiable information (PII) into AI tools, even in institutionally approved tools.
- submitting for IRB approval any research on humans, including data and images, whether identifiable or deidentified, that involves AI tools
Policy & Guidelines for Using Generative AI
Albert Einstein College of Medicine has developed a Generative AI Policy and guidelines to encourage safe use of AI tools for the following groups:
Please familiarize yourself with the above, as well as all other relevant official policies.
