The Einstein Honorary Alumnus Award
Dr. E. John Gallagher was the founding chair of emergency medicine at Einstein, and is professor emeritus of emergency medicine, of medicine, and of epidemiology & population health. His research interests included out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, randomized clinical trials for the management of acute pain, diagnostic testing strategies, and bedside clinical decision-making. For decades he also focused attention on ways to optimize care of the medically underserved inner-city population of the Bronx. Dr. Gallagher served as chair of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine, as director of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and in editorial capacities at Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, and the Journal of Emergency Medicine. His publications include more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, 30 book chapters and monographs, and 100 abstracts on a wide range of topics in emergency medicine, and he has given more than 125 presentations at national scientific meetings. He was the first recipient of the Sam Rosen Einstein Student Teaching Award, decided by student ballot; he was also given the Resident Teaching Award three times (the maximum number permitted) by emergency medicine residents, and a Leadership Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2002. Dr. Gallagher earned his B.A. at Franklin & Marshall College and his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; he did postgraduate work as a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in clinical epidemiology at the Yale School of Medicine.
