Dr. Nir Barzilai is the director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research and of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging. He is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research, and member of the Diabetes Research Center and of the Divisions of Endocrinology & Diabetes and Geriatrics. His research interests focus on several key mechanisms involved in the biology of aging, including the effects of the environment (mainly nutrients) on extending life and the genetic determinants of lifespan. He discovered the first "longevity gene” in humans and is further characterizing the phenotype and genotype of humans with exceptional longevity. full bio

      This R01 serve as a resource to maintain the follow-up activity for a longitudinal study of families with exceptional longevity (LonGenity). This also enables us to provide data needed for other R01 kind of funded projects and for replication.

      This R01 is investigating the changes in whole genome, site specific, methylation in centenarians and their families, in relationship to biological phenotypes.

      Role of exceptional longevity genotypes in protection against frailty in aging This longitudinal study (LonGenity) on offspring of centenarians and subjects with no family history of longevity will allow discovering and validating genetic components that protect from age-related phenotype and frailty.
