Adquisición, recepción y utilización de material radiactivo

To order radioactive material you must be an authorized Principal Investigator or working for an authorized Principal Investigator. The Principal Investigator must be licensed to receive the specific radioisotope and activity to be ordered. The radioisotopes and total amounts are specified on their license to possess and use radioactive material.

Purchasing Material: Purchasing of radioactive material is done through the Procurement Departments Epro service. When purchasing radioactive material from a vendor the researcher must provide the radioisotope, the amount of material and the name and telephone number of the licensed Principal Investigator on the electronic purchase order. The delivery address for all radioactive material packages must be to the Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) at Forchheimer 800. All radioactive material orders must be approved by the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). If the order contains a radioisotope or quantity that the Principal Investigator is not licensed for, the order will be rejected. The RSO is only responsible for approving the order, not placing the order with the vendor.

Other Institutions: If you wish to receive radioactive material from another institution you will be expected to supply them with a copy of Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Radioactive Materials License. The license is on file in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and can be sent to the institution making the request. Provide the Radiation Safety Officer with the other institutions contact information and he will have the license sent out.

Receiving Radioactive Material: Typically when you order radioactive material on one day, it will arrive the next day. The laboratory who ordered the material should ensure that an individual is available to pick up the package from the EH&S office (800 Forchheimer) that day. The person should be wearing a laboratory coat and their dosimeter to pick up the package. The recipient does not need to wear gloves as the package is surveyed for contamination prior to pick up. The individual will need to provide a signature for the package at the front desk prior to taking the package back to their laboratory. If the package is going to the Kennedy building, the individual needs to obtain a letter from EH&S permitting them to take the package from the South side of campus across Morris Park Avenue to the North side of campus.

Using Radioactive Material: All radioactive material received by the Principal Investigator must be documented on a Record of Radioactive Material Form (EHS-FRM-2024-024). This form is used to document the receipt, use and disposal of all radioactive material in the laboratory. The form is provided with each radioactive material order when the package is picked up from the EH&S office. The form should then be stored in the laboratory’s radiation safety binder which will be inspected during quarterly inspections.

In addition to the Record of Radioactive Material Form, if you dispose of radioactive material down an authorized sink drain you should use the Sink Disposal Log (EHS-FRM-2018-014) to document the radioisotope, the activity, and the date of disposal. If radioactive material is held in the laboratory to decay for 10 half-lives, a Survey Record of Disposed Radioactive Waste from Decay-in-Storage Form should be completed and stored in the laboratory’s radiation safety binder.
