The Residency Experience
Overview
The Albert Montefiore Einstein Division of Dermatology strives for excellence in patient care, teaching, and research. We offer our residents a well-rounded and thorough education in medical, surgical, pediatric and cosmetic dermatology. Teaching is our top priority and our faculty take pride in providing a top-notch education to our residents. Our program is located in the heart of the Bronx, and we are committed to providing high quality dermatologic care to our community.
Current Residents
The Albert Einstein/ Montefiore dermatology residency program welcomes up to 7 residents each year. Meet our current residents here.
Clinics
Residents gain a diverse perspective on cutaneous disorders and treatments by rotating through the many hospitals and clinics affiliated with our program, including Montefiore Medical Center’s Moses, Weiler, and Wakefield campuses, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and two of New York City’s public hospitals, Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital. Residents spend time in a variety of settings including adult and pediatric ambulatory clinics, surgical clinics, specialty clinics, cosmetic clinics and inpatient consult services. Full-time faculty supervise residents in all of their clinical activities.
Didactic Curriculum
Our didactic curriculum is structured around formal didactics on Monday and Thursday mornings. Monday lectures are based on chapters in Bolognia’s Dermatology as well as various specialized lectures including dermatopharmacology, pediatric dermatology, basic science, and dermatologic surgery. Our dermatopathology curriculum consists of weekly reviews of unknown slides at our multiheaded microscope with both the dermatopathology fellow and our attending dermatopathologist. This is often preceded by a review of virtual slides earlier in the week that correspond to chapters in Elston’s Dermatopathology to better prepare for the new board exam format.
Thursday mornings are comprised of divisional grand rounds and subsequent lectures. Patients for grand rounds are recruited by residents and faculty and are typically viewed live followed by discussion and presentations. Residents are guided by faculty to formulate a differential diagnosis based on symptomatology and clinical morphology. Grand rounds may also feature guest lectures by expert speakers from across the country.
Specialty Training
Dermatopathology
Training in dermatopathology is provided through a joint effort of the Division of Dermatology and the Department of Pathology. Additional Dermatopathology training is emphasized throughout all three years of training with weekly clinicopathologic conferences, lecture series, dermatopathology textbook reviews, and slide reviews. Residents also have three months of time dedicated completely to dermatopathology during residency. During these rotations, residents work with our in-house Dermatopathologist, Dr. Bijal Amin, and spend two days days a week at Bridge Dermatopathology, the practice of our affiliated dermatopathologists Drs. Mark Jacobson, Paul Chu, and Nooshin Brinster.
Residents are able to review biopsies performed at Jacobi and North Central Bronx with Dr. Adnan Mir.
Dermatologic Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology
Training in dermatologic surgery is provided through specialty electives and weekly surgical clinics at Montefiore, Jacobi, and Wakefield. The dermatologic surgery curriculum includes a formal lecture series and 2 months of hands-on exposure to Mohs micrographic surgery and complex cutaneous reconstructions with our dedicated dermatologic surgeon on faculty.
Based mainly at the brand new, state-of-the-art Hutchinson Metro campus, residents not only gain surgical skills, but have exposure to a variety of non-surgical procedures, including lasers and non-invasive injectable techniques. This rotation also includes a weekly resident cosmetic clinic in which residents perform all cosmetic procedures under attending supervision. The cosmetic dermatology curriculum is supplemented by evening sessions in which residents attain more hands-on experience with cosmetic dermatology experts.
Research
The Montefiore Einstein Division of Dermatology strives to cultivate academic dermatologists and encourages trainees to undertake careers that include clinical or laboratory research. During training, all dermatology residents are guided through the creation and implementation of a clinical research project and encouraged to publish their results. Residents interested in more dedicated research time are encouraged to discuss possible accommodations with the program leadership.
Diversity
Montefiore Einstein is committed to recruiting a diverse group of trainees who are passionate about treating an underserved patient population and skin of color. Our Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Cultural Competence works to make sure that our resident training includes a diverse set of topics and speakers.
