Billett Appointed as Chief of Hematology

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announced that effective May 1,  Dr. Henny Billett is the new Chief of the Division of Hematology.

Henny Billett, MD has been has been Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pathology since 2002, and has served as Associate Chief of the Division of Hematology since August 1, 2007.

Dr. Billett has run a highly effective Thrombosis Prevention and Treatment Program at Montefiore for a number of years, and has been very active clinically, being regularly cited in Top Doctors and Best Doctors publications.

Dr. Billett has been highly active in clinical research, with ten current ongoing IRB-approved clinical trials, and principal investigatorships on multiple trials over a number of years. She has over 100 articles, reviews, and presented abstracts, and has lectured widely on thrombocytopathies, hypercoagulability, transfusion therapy, and other topics.

Dr. Billett has held a number of leadership positions in the past, including the following:

  • Physician-in-charge, Coagulation Laboratory, Queens Hospital Center;
  • Director, Heredity Clinic, Van Etten, General Clinical Research Center;
  • Director, Hematology Training Program, Einstein and Montefiore;
  • Chief, Division of Hematology, Department of Pathology, Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

She has served as President of the Society for the Study of Blood; member of the American Society of Hematology's Committee on Training Programs; and Chair of the Laboratory and Genetics Task Force of the Hemophilia Services Advisory Committee, Region II.

Dr. Billett received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania cum laude; her MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and an MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London. She was a Senior House Officer, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and then an Internal Medicine resident and Hematology Fellow at Montefiore.

The Division of Hematology, previously led by Dr. Michael B. Stemerman, has an extensive history of excellence in research, education and clinical care, including funded research in stem cell investigations, genetics, hemoglobin disorders and thrombosis and hemostasis. Among other accomplishments, members of the Division’s faculty have been National Academy of Sciences fellows and past presidents of the American Society of Hematology. Graduating fellows have been successful in academic and clinical practice achievements, with an impressive number heading divisions of hematology and departments of medicine, as well as being deans of medical schools throughout the nation.
