Department of Medicine Research

The Montefiore Einstein Department of Medicine has a long tradition of conducting cutting-edge basic, clinical, and translational research. We take pride in providing excellent training, professional development, mentoring, and support for our research faculty. Our collaborative research environment attracts outstanding basic scientists and clinical investigators from the United States and around the world.

The Department of Medicine’s robust research program, which spans 14 divisions, was ranked 22nd in 2020 by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research with over $96 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our faculty leads six NIH-funded research centers and two additional centers of excellence. In addition, we have NIH training grants for aging, infectious diseases, and cardiovascular disease.

At any given time, more than 200 clinical trials are ongoing in the department. Access to diverse patient populations, shared technologies, and a biorepository of over 400,000 human specimens afford our researchers vast opportunities to translate lab-based discoveries into improved clinical outcomes. The electronic medical record coupled with advanced information technology provide a dynamic environment in which to conduct population-based research.

Mentoring is a critical element to our academic success. Our strong faculty mentoring program helps talented junior faculty with K awards transition to their careers as independent investigators. Mentors also inspire residents and fellows to work on innovative projects in the clinic and the lab, both in the Bronx community and abroad. The College is now offering a grant proposal advisory service to Einstein investigators through our office of grant support. The purpose of this service is to aid investigators in generating high quality, polished proposals to secure research funding.
