April 19,2015 - BRONX, NY - Dr. Vafa Tabatabaie, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology & Diabetes) has been appointed the new Moses campus site leader for the Department of Medicine third-year clerkship.

Montefiore Medical Center’s Moses Campus is one of Einstein’s largest clerkship sites, offering students a wealth of hands-on experience treating complex cases with multiple co-morbidities including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, COPD, and asthma. Students are encouraged to take full ownership of their patients and work closely with subspecialists and supportive staff in managing care. The Moses Campus site is routinely highly ranked by the students for its breadth of patient experience and excellence of faculty and housestaff teaching.

“Dr. Tabatabaie is an excellent fit for this position,” said Dr. Amanda Raff, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine (Nephrology) and Associate Chair of Medicine for Undergraduate Medical Education. “She is both energetic and thoughtful in her approach to medical education, and eager to take on the challenges and responsibilities of a site leader.”

The clerkship emphasizes the importance of compassionate patient care with attention to sociocultural and economic factors, as well as ethical issues in clinical decision making. “Medical students play a vital role in patient care. They often spend the most time with patients, get to know patients and their families intimately and provide a unique perspective into their individual needs,” said Dr. Tabatabaie.

Dr. Tabatabaie received her medical degree from Shahid Beheshti Medical University in Tehran, Iran. After several years as a researcher of thyroid cancer in Toronto, Canada, she came to Montefiore in 2007, initially as a clinical observer and then as an investigator in the Division of Endocrinology under the direction of Drs. Norman Fleischer and Martin Surks. She graduated from the Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2011, receiving the Award for Outstanding House Officer in Internal Medicine for her exceptional enthusiasm and teaching skills, and completed the Endocrinology Fellowship Program in 2013. She joined the Montefiore Einstein Division of Endocrinology faculty later that year.

“On my first day as an attending physician, I realized what terrific training I’d received at Montefiore Einstein,” Dr. Tabatabaie said. “I am continually inspired by our seasoned attendings—people who have been practicing in the medical field for decades, yet are still passionate about patient care. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and a wonderful quality to instill in our future doctors.”

“Dr. Tabatabaie has the enthusiasm, knowledge base, clinical and leadership skills to be a wonderful site leader who will be a role model for our students,” Dr. Raff said.
