Overview

The ultrasound section within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center is a broad-based clinical and educational program.

The Clinical Program

The objective of the clinical program is to provide high quality diagnostic scans and invasive procedures in a sophisticated, pleasant environment for our patients. We operate seven units located in the Bronx and in Westchester counties. These units are used as referral centers for patients within the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut region as well as for patients from other states. Our facilities are equipped with state of the art 3-D ultrasound machines and 42'' plasma screens which are used for our patients' education during the scan. We pride ourselves in providing patients with complete information on our findings by the end of the scan; women with complicated diagnoses are counseled about the findings and the recommended management at the same visit when the ultrasound is done.
The prenatal services include:
First trimester screening for Down syndrome (nuchal translucency)
Early transvaginal anatomy scans
Late second trimester detailed anatomy scans
Third trimester growth scans
Fetal surveillance (including biophysical profiles and fetal and maternal Doppler studies)
3-D modalities to evaluate fetal anomalies (particularly brain anomalies)
4-D modalities to evaluate cardiac structure
Diagnostic procedures such as Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS), Amniocentesis, Placental biopsies and Cordocentesis
Therapeutic and interventional procedures include intrauterine fetal blood transfusion (fetal anemia), multifetal selective reduction and vesico-amniotic shunts for obstructive urinary anomalies
The gynecological services include:
Abdominal and transvaginal pelvic scans
3-dimensional sonohysterograms
Therapeutic procedures including ultrasound guided cyst drainage and ultrasound guided therapy for ectopic gestations (mainly cornual)

The Educational Program

As a part of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, we offer training for physicians in all aspects of diagnostic and interventional ultrasound. Maternal Fetal Medicine fellows are educated in our Ultrasound Section, and actively participate in interventional procedures. In addition, the unit provides education for medical students and residents in Obstetrics & Gynecology as well as residents in Reproductive Genetics.

One of the most important academic activities organized by the ultrasound section is the Fetal Diagnosis Rounds. These are bi-weekly multidisciplinary rounds in which newly diagnosed fetal anomalies are presented and management is discussed. In these extremely popular, CME accredited educational meetings, participants include experts from our Maternal Fetal Medicine division, Reproductive Genetics division, neonatal intensive care unit, medicine department, pediatric cardio-thoracic surgical division and many more.

Investigative opportunities exist within the ultrasound section for both basic and clinical research. Research is always a result of cooperation with and support of the department's academic divisions: Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Reproductive Genetics, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
