The Application Review Process

Please note that primary applications are verified by AMCAS and then sent to Albert Einstein College of Medicine office of admissions. That process can take up to 6 weeks, during which applicants should stay in contact with AMCAS to make sure that all transcripts have been received. After Einstein receives and acknowledges your primary and secondary applications in AMCAS, it can take up to an additional 6 weeks for us to complete reviewing your application materials, especially depending on the month AMCAS sends us your application materials. For instance, approximately half of applications for the year are uploaded by July 15. Our ability to send your application to the admissions committee for review depends on a few things, such as how early your primary AMCAS application is sent to us, when your letters of evaluation are uploaded to the AMCAS Letter Service, when the secondary application and fees are submitted, and when your MCAT scores are available. Einstein’s office of admissions sends interview invitations on average once a month beginning in August and ending in April. We use an online tool to schedule interviews. You may choose your preferred interview date depending on the availability of the admissions committee.

Early Decision Applicants

If you are certain that Albert Einstein College of Medicine is your first-choice school and your qualifications are outstanding, we encourage you to apply as an early-decision applicant. If you choose this option, you may apply only apply to Einstein. To be considered for early decision, you must submit your primary application to AMCAS by August 1. All supporting documentation and letters of recommendation must be submitted no later than August 15. MCATS should be taken by the appropriate date in July to meet the August deadline. An interview is required for all applicants under serious consideration for admission. Einstein’s admissions committee notifies early applicants of their admissions status by October 1. If you are admitted as an early applicant, you must accept the position offered. Those who are not accepted at this time will be considered with the regular applicant pool and may apply to other medical schools.

Deferred Enrollment Applicants

If you are accepted to Albert Einstein College of Medicine and would like to defer your enrollment, you may request to do so for a period of one year by petitioning the admissions committee in writing. We typically only consider these types of requests if during the deferral year you will be completing coursework leading to a degree, a specified research project, or a clinical activity that provides you with a better understanding of and appreciation for the delivery of healthcare. No other proposals qualify for deferred enrollment. We will only consider your request for deferred enrollment if it is accompanied by a letter from the project director of the program you are participating in. The letter should be addressed to the admissions committee and sent to:

Noreen Kerrigan
Associate Dean of Admissions
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
1300 Morris Park Avenue
Bronx, New York 10461

If your deferred enrollment is granted, you must apply as an early-decision candidate in the summer immediately after your deferral is granted and no later than July 15. Your acceptance is guaranteed for the following year, and you are not eligible to apply elsewhere.

You must remit a $100 non-refundable deposit upon confirmation of your deferral status and must relinquish all other places you may be holding at other medical schools, including other deferrals. Requests for deferral are not considered after April 30, even if a letter of acceptance is awarded after that date.

Nontraditional Applicants

Several colleges and universities offer postbaccalaureate premedical programs to applicants who require more skill in the basic sciences or who are in the process of deciding whether a career in medicine is appropriate for them. Some are designed for individuals who are looking to make a career change and have not yet completed the science courses required for application to medical school. Other programs are tailored to applicants who have taken requisite courses but wish to improve their existing academic record. And some are designed to assist individuals from groups currently underrepresented in medicine or from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Transfer Policy for M.D. Students

Albert Einstein College of Medicine does not accept applications for transfer. If you have been enrolled in an allied health profession school, you must apply as a first-year applicant. Please review Einstein’s Transfer Policy for M.D. Students.
