<p>Mayuko Uehara, MD, PhD, is an Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Cardiothoracic Surgery Super Fellow at Montefiore-Einstein. </p>
<p>Dr. Uehara earned her Doctor of Medicine at Shimane Medical University inJapan, and a PhD in Clinical Research of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sapporo Medical University Hospital.. She completed an internship in medicine at Yokosuka Kyosai Hospital, and her residency and clinical fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Sapporo Medical University Hospital. She also completed a research fellowship in transplant immunology and was an instructor in transplant immunology at Brigham and Women&rsquo;s Hospital in Boston.</p>
<p >Dr. Uehara&rsquo;s research experience includes a new method for the detection of coronary artery bypass graft using transit time flow measurement (TTFM) and MemCalc software. She is a member of the Japan Surgical Society, the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Japanese Circulation Society, the Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery and the Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery. She is also a member of the American Society of Transplantation, The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the American Heart Association and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Dr. Uehara is a board certified surgeon in the Japan Surgical Society and a board certified cardiovascular surgeon in the Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery. In addition, she is board certified in angiology by the Japanese College of Angiology and board certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).</p>

Biography

<p>Tadahisa Sugiura, MD, PhD, is an attending surgeon and Assistant Professor at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Sugiura&rsquo;s clinical focus is in structural heart disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, the treatment of end-stage heart failure, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and cardiothoracic organ procurement.</p><p>Educated in Japan, Dr. Sugiura attended University of Tsukuba School of Medicine from 1997 to 2003, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree. He began his postdoctoral training with a residency at Tokyo Women&rsquo;s Medical University from 2003 to 2005, followed by a residency at Seirei Hamamatsu General Hospital in Japan from 2005 to 2007. He then undertook a fellowship at Tokyo Women&rsquo;s Medical University in 2008, followed by a fellowship at Yokohama City University Medical Center from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he earned his PhD from Tokyo Women&rsquo;s Medical University. Dr. Sugiura came to the United States in 2013 and continued his training, completing a research fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital, The Ohio State University in 2016. He was an advanced fellow at Texas Heart Institute at Baylor St. Luke&rsquo;s Medical Center from 2016 to 2018 and a super fellow at Montefiore-Einstein from 2018 to 2019.</p><p>Dr. Sugiura&rsquo;s research focuses on cardiac regenerative therapy, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cell) research and stem cell medicine. He has shared his research through publication in many peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters, abstracts, posters and presentations. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for several publications including <em>The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine</em>.</p><p>Dr. Sugiura is board certified and is a member of several professional societies.</p>

Biography

<p>Dr. Goldstein was raised in Caracas, Venezuela by a family of physicians. He attended Medical School at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he received the Alpha Omega Alpha Distinction and was recipient of the prestigious Lamport Biomedical Research Prize for his work on monoclonal antibodies. Dr. Goldstein went on to complete his General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospitals. During this time, he also completed one year of translational research in Cardiothoracic Surgery.</p><p>Dr. Goldstein received numerous research awards for his work on left ventricular assist devices and was recipient of teaching awards from both medical students and surgery residents. He was a recipient of the Claire Lucille Humanitarian Award for his work on children with congenital heart disease in Guatemala. Following completion of his training, he was recruited as Director of the Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Support programs at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey where during his five year tenure, he elevated that program to the 8th busiest center in the country. Most recently, he has joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center.</p><div></div>

<p>Stephen J. Forest, MD, is Surgical Director, Advanced Pulmonary Failure and Lung Transplantation and Associate Professor at Montefiore-Einstein. He has a clinical focus on the treatment of patients with end-stage heart and lung failure through the use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices and organ transplantation. He also has a clinical interest in arterial revascularization for the treatment of advanced ischemic heart disease, particularly in patients with severely reduced cardiac function.</p><p>After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in 2004, Dr. Forest attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2008. He continued at Montefiore-Einstein for his postdoctoral training, completing his residency in general surgery in 2014, his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship in 2016 and his MCS and transplant fellowship in 2016.</p><p>Dr. Forest&rsquo;s research focus parallels his clinical interests. Through his utilization of the national transplant database, he has sought to improve the use of donor organs and improve outcomes in patients undergoing heart or lung transplantation. Biography

<p>Dr. Joseph J. DeRose, Jr., graduated Summa Cum Laude from Georgetown University where he earned the Chapman Medal for the most outstanding student in Biology. He completed his MD degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and received the Whipple award for the most outstanding student in Surgery.</p><p>Dr. DeRose completed his General Surgery Residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and received the Blakemore Prize for Research upon graduation. He then completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Columbia-Prebyterian Medical Center as well as a post-graduate fellowship in Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Columbia.</p><p>Dr. DeRose was appointed Director of Robotics in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital from 2001-2006. He joined the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care as Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery and Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in October 2006.</p>
