Research Intern / Research Trainee / Visiting Graduate Student / Visiting Research Scientist

To appropriately classify individuals participating in research at Einstein, we have developed the titles of Research Intern, Research Trainee, Visiting Graduate Student and Visiting Research Scientist. Appointing an individual in one of these titles regardless of whether they are being paid on the Einstein payroll, require that the person receive an offer letter, wage statement and complete the online harassment training module.
For all classifications, self-funding is not permitted, with the exception of the Research Intern category, and housing is not available.
The required application and documents from the candidate must be submitted to the Office of International Services (internationalservices@einsteinmed.edu) prior to any offer letter being prepared. The documents will be reviewed, and a title will be specified to the department. Once title has been conferred, the offer letter and appendices should be prepared.
If a J-1 visa is needed, the visa request is incorporated in the application.

Research Intern	Completion of bachelor’s or master’s degree Or Matriculating in a master’s program or matriculating doctoral program student in another University	Short term appointment for those who wish to conduct research prior to pursuing an advanced degree or employment in biotech / pharma Salary minimum is equivalent to a 1st year PhD Student and must be either be provided by the faculty member at Einstein and/or grant / fellowship / stipend from another institution or Self-funded. Proof of Health Insurance is required Housing is not available	up to 120 days, 4 months maximum
Research Trainee	Completion of bachelor’s degree Or Completion of master’s degree	For those who wish to conduct research prior to pursuing an advanced degree or employment in biotech / pharma Salary minimum is equivalent to a 1st year PhD Student Salary and benefits, including health insurance must be provided by the faculty member at Einstein and/or grant / fellowship / stipend from another institution Research Trainees are entitled to register (either for credit or to audit) for one graduate course per block Proof of Health Insurance is required Housing is not available	more than 4 months, up to 1 year maximum. Extension into year two requires approval from Department Chair and Dean’s office
Visiting Graduate Student	Matriculating doctoral program student in another university	For those who wish to conduct their doctoral research here Salary minimum is equivalent to a 1st year PhD Student Salary and benefits, including health insurance must be provided by the faculty member at Einstein and/or grant / fellowship / stipend from another institution Visiting Graduate Students are entitled to register (either for credit or to audit) for one graduate course per block Proof of Health Insurance is required Housing is not available	5 years
	All but dissertation (ABD)	Pending acceptance of thesis	6 months Brief interim period before appointment to a Research Fellow
Visiting Research Scientist	Doctoral Degree	Must have a faculty appointment at another University or working in biotech or pharma and wish to learn new technology or methods Salary minimum is equivalent to a Post-Doctoral Fellow Salary and benefits, including health insurance must be covered by employer Proof of Health Insurance is required Housing is not available	1 year Extension beyond 1 year requires Dean’s Office review and approval

Appointment Documentation prepared by the Academic Department:

A completed and signed Research Intern / Research Trainee / Visiting Graduate Student / Visiting Research Scientist Application. (Application must be typed)

Appointment Documentation required from the Candidate:

Current Curriculum Vitae.
Copy of current degree held (translated and evaluated if necessary).
Proof of financial support(if not supported by Einstein).
If requesting a J-1 Visa for the candidate, please provide a complete copy of the Foreign Passport.
