Qualitative and mixed-methods research provides unique insights into the complexity of social and clinical contexts, elevating the perspectives of patients, caregivers, providers, and communities, to identify not only “what works” but also “for whom, under what circumstances, and why.”
The Qualitative and Mixed Methods (QMM) Core at the Montefiore Einstein Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) aims to strengthen the rigor, relevance, and impact of translational science. We partner with investigators and community stakeholders to ensure research addresses real-world priorities and generates meaningful, actionable evidence.
The QMM provides conceptual and technical support across the full research lifecycle from study design to dissemination. Our consultative services and training help investigators and their community partners to deepen understanding, capture multiple perspectives, and address complexity of social and clinical contexts shaping translational research.
Services Offered:
The Core provides consultative support and training across the full research lifecycle, including:
- Study Design
We assist investigators in developing research questions, selecting appropriate qualitative or mixed methods designs, and aligning aims with appropriate data collection methods and analytic approaches.
- Research Protocols
We provide guidance on developing research protocols, including sampling and recruitment strategies, consent procedures, and stakeholder engagement approaches tailored to both clinical and community settings.
- Methodological Support for Grant Applications
Our team helps investigators craft compelling and rigorous methods sections, rigor/reproducibility statements, and mixed-methods integration plans that strengthen the competitiveness of grant applications.
- Data Collection Tools
We collaborate with investigators to develop high-quality interview and focus group guides, observation templates, and other innovative methods to identify and capture multiple perspectives and lenses.
- Data Management
We advise on workflows and resources needed for data recording, transcription, translation, and storage, and provide guidance on the use of qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Dedoose) to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
- Data Analysis Approaches
We support a range of rigorous analytic strategies, including grounded theory, thematic and framework analysis, rapid qualitative analysis, and mixed-methods integration techniques such as joint display matrices.
- Arts-Based and Novel Methods
We provide expertise in innovative methodologies such as photo-elicitation, participatory mapping, and arts-based approaches that deepen understanding and enhance community engagement.
- Cognitive Interviewing
We help refine quantitative survey items, clinical tools, and consent materials to improve understandability, cultural responsiveness, and validity.
- Research Team Trainings
We offer training modules on qualitative interviewing, focus group facilitation, qualitative and mixed methods analysis, rapid qualitative methods, and use of qualitative software platforms. Training modules are tailored to research team needs.
