Fries Chosen for NIH Study Section

Bettina Fries, MD
Dr. Bettina Fries, Associate Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and of Microbiology & Immunology, and Firm Two Leader of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, has been invited to join the AIDS-Associated Opportunistic Infections and Cancer Study Section, Center for Scientific Review (NIH), for the term beginning July 2012 and ending June 30 2018.

Dr. Fries' research focuses on Candida and Cryptococcus, collaborating between laboratories at Einstein and India under the AITRP program. Molecular epidemiology of Indian C. neoformans and Candida strains are contrasted with US strains, and data from Indian patients with Cryptococcosis are analyzed. Dr. Fries and collaborators have produced many publications, with future projects underway to yield similar promising results.

Study section members are selected based on the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors. Service on a study section requires mature judgment and objectivity as well as the ability to work effectively in a group, qualities the Center believes Dr. Fries will bring to this important task. Membership on a study section represents a major commitment of professional time and energy as well as a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Study sections review incoming grant applications, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.
