The total number of Categorical Internal Medicine programs participating in the 2014 match was 408; of those, 21 programs did not fill, an increase from 14 unfilled internal medicine residency programs last year.

Interest by U.S. medical graduates in Internal Medicine as a career remains stable. The percentages of U.S. medical school grads entering Categorical Medicine programs have been: 19% in 2006, 18.9% in 2007, 18.5% in 2008, 18.1% in 2009, 18.2% in 2010, 18.9% in 2011, 18.7% in 2012, 19.1% in 2013, and 19.3% in 2014.

This year nationally, 48.5% of Internal Medicine matches were US grads, compared to 49.9% in 2013, 55.7% in 2012, 57.8% in 2011, and 54.5% in 2010.

In Primary Care Internal Medicine, the number of offered positions continues to rebound nationally: 247 in 2009, 259 in 2010, 286 in 2011, 311 in 2012, 335 in 2013, and 335 in 2014. Of the 335 Primary Care programs in this year's match, only one went unfilled, an improvement over four unfilled programs last year.

"Internal Medicine is alive and well at Montefiore Einstein," said Dr. Victor Schuster, Chairman of the Department of Medicine. "We continue to have a very high level of interest in Medicine by our student body, and our house staff program remains extremely strong, both in Primary Care/Social Medicine in Categorical Program."
