I chose Montefiore for a myriad of reasons. The faculty/resident environment was incredibly welcoming, which made me feel comfortable during my interview. I felt like there was a true intent to get to know me not only as a physician, but also my interests outside of work. The patient population as a native New Yorker with Caribbean/African heritage is also meaningful. There are so many opportunities to expand on learning a new language, understanding cultural preferences, and practicing empathy. It is truly a privilege to serve members of the community and not only help them them, but learn from them as well.

I chose Montefiore because I was truly impressed by the exposure to complex and diverse cases coupled with the robust Ob/Gyn training in a tight-knit, supportive program.
Montefiore’s commitment to health equity among diverse patient populations strongly appealed to me. I especially identified with the program’s emphasis on high-quality patient care and approach to resident education—qualities I've honed through my own experiences working with my medical school’s free clinic and health equity pathway.
On interview day, I spoke with multiple Ob/Gyn residents about their experiences at Montefiore. One of the things that stood out to me was the emphasis on advocacy. I was especially excited to learn about the Health Equity and Antiracism Training (HEART) sessions and collaborate with residents to help further social Ob/Gyn initiatives. Montefiore’s approach closely aligned with my belief in addressing social determinants of health through patient advocacy. I knew this would be the perfect program for me and being here reinforces this. I have the most loving group of co-interns and residents that I could have ever asked for and know this is the place for me!

Above all else, I chose Monte because of the people. I loved the sense of community and friendship I got from the residents; the strong support and encouragement I felt from faculty; and the camaraderie I got from nursing and PA staff! On second look day, the charge nurse insisted on meeting all of us and said “I can’t wait to work with you guys.” Every person took the time to meet us and get to know us, and I genuinely felt like I had found my place.
On top of that, I knew I wanted to be at a program that emphasized social justice-oriented medicine. Montefiore takes seriously its role as the major healthcare provider to the Bronx. We are not just learning to be doctors, we are also learning to be advocates for our patients and agents of change in healthcare as a whole, whether that is through direct patient care, political advocacy, or clinical research. I knew that as a resident at Monte, I would become both an excellent physician-scientist and a stronger activist for healthcare equity. I am so super happy to be here.
