Professional Interests

Dr. James A. Meltzer is a pediatric emergency clinician-researcher and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Meltzer also serves as the Associate Fellowship Director and Assistant Division Director for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at Jacobi Medical Center. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr Meltzer acted as the PEM Site Director for the North Central Bronx Hospital from 2021-2023.

He is an active researcher and collaborates closely with the trauma service at Jacobi Medical Center’s Pediatric Trauma Center. Dr. Meltzer has also participated in several research projects through the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Collaborative Research Committee. In addition, Dr Meltzer coordinates a Summer Research Program at Jacobi for medical students.

Dr. Meltzer’s research interests focus mainly on the fields of pediatric trauma and appendicitis. In addition to his numerous research publications, Dr. Meltzer has served as Assistant Editor for the 6th edition of Crain and Gershel’s Clinical Manual of Emergency Pediatrics (Cambridge University Press). He also authored chapters in this book in both Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound. Dr. Meltzer has lectured extensively at both local and regional conferences and has presented his research at national conferences. He currently also serves as a Statistics and Methodology Section Editor for Western Journal of Emergency Medicine.

As a clinician, Dr. Meltzer has mentored hundreds of medical students, pediatric and emergency medicine residents, and PEM fellows over the past two decades. As a tribute to these efforts, he was awarded the Henry Barnett Teaching Award (2015) and a Faculty Leadership Award (2022) from the Department of Pediatrics at Jacobi, and was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society at Einstein (2020). In addition, Dr. Meltzer directs a monthly biostatistics lab for PEM fellows. Under his mentorship, dozens of medical students, residents, and fellows have successfully completed and published their research.

From 2008 - 2024, Dr. Meltzer has also served as the Director of Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound at Jacobi. In this role, he developed a curriculum and conducted a training program for PEM fellows at the medical center. Upon completion of the training program, fellows were formally credentialed in Emergency Ultrasound.

Dr. Meltzer received his M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2002 and completed his internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in 2005. He completed a PEM fellowship at Jacobi in 2008. In addition, Dr Meltzer earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Research with Distinction from Einstein’s Clinical Research Training Program in 2017.
