We study the role of metabolic plasticity of pathogens in their interaction with the host. Our model system is Mycobacterium, a genus that is very diverse and highly successful in persisting in humans, animals and the environment. Using an integrated approach of genetic engineering, metabolomics, biochemical assays, transcriptomics and animal experiments we are pursuing fundamental questions such as which nutrients and energy sources do pathogenic microorganisms use in the host, or how do aerobic pathogens survive in host tissues that are hypoxic. Our ultimate goal is to translate our findings into new chemotherapeutic strategies against human pathogens.
