Norman Saffra, MD, FACS, is one of the nation’s leading ophthalmic laser and microsurgeons. Dr. Saffra is known for his expertise in treating diseases that cause visual loss.He is an expert in conditions effecting the posterior segment of the eye (the back of the eye), specifically conditions that involve the Optic Nerve or the Retina and Vitreous.He has extensive experience in treating diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration,retinal tears and detachments, uveitis and the ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease.. Dr. Saffra is an active member of many ophthalmic associations and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists,The Retina Society,The American Uveitis Society, and the North American Association of Neuro Ophthalmology.
Dr. Saffra frequently lectures in medical schools and to physicians throughout the country, and has published numerous papers in leading scientific journals.He has recently been awarded 2 patents, co designed 2 surgical instruments with major manufacturers, and is now a consultant for the FDA's panel of Ophthalmic Medical Devices.
Under Dr. Saffra’s leadership, The Eye Institute at Maimonides Medical Center, is at the forefront of advancing medical science by pursuing research into diseases that cause permanent vision loss. Dr. Saffra is on the staff of the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.
