Professional Interests
Dr. Yoon Kang was appointed the inaugural vice dean for education at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Ruth L. Gottesman Chair in Education in July, 2024 following a national search. In this position, Dr. Kang oversees all M.D., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. education programs and associated offices. This includes admissions, the office of medical education, the graduate programs in biomedical sciences, and the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), which results in a both an M.D. and Ph.D. degree. She is working closely with institutional and education leaders across Montefiore Einstein to foster strategic growth in the education mission.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kang’s focus has been on leadership, innovation, and mentoring. Prior to joining Einstein, Dr. Kang was senior associate dean for education at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) where she oversaw all undergraduate medical education programs and offices, the office of continuing medical education, and the Physician Assistant Program. She was first recruited to WCM in 2004 to lead the development of the Margaret and Ian Smith Clinical Skills Center, a custom-built facility for simulation training. Named the founding director in 2006, she launched the medical college’s simulation education program, and was appointed the Richard P. Cohen, M.D. associate professor of medical education in 2009. In 2015, in conjunction with implementation of a new medical education curriculum, Dr. Kang was named WCM’s inaugural assistant dean, clinical curriculum and held successive leadership roles across every aspect of medical education.
As an institutional leader, Dr. Kang emphasizes a data-driven approach to strategic planning and launched a continuous quality improvement initiative and office at Weill Cornell Medicine. She advanced stakeholder partnerships and central infrastructure to increase operational efficiency across education offices, address accreditation needs, and allow for targeted institutional growth in the education mission. Areas of focus have been strengthened outcomes databases, structured opportunities for scholarship and innovation for both students and faculty, diversifying student curricular offerings both domestically and internationally, and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a particular interest in student financial wellbeing.
Dr. Kang is a longstanding leader in education. She has taught thousands of students and mentored and advised nearly one hundred medical students, graduate students and trainees, staff, and faculty, many of whom have advanced to a wide range of leadership roles in academic medicine, hospital administration and industry. Dr. Kang was selected a Class 2020 fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for women leaders at schools of medicine, dentistry and public health and has also served on National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) committees which establish clinical skills standards and content for medical licensure exams. She also recently served as Chair of the Technology Task Force for the AAMC’s clinical skills assessment initiative. Dr Kang has received numerous teaching awards from the student body, was previously selected as the White Coat Ceremony keynote speaker and was named a fellow by the Weill Cornell Medicine Alumni Board in 2022.
Dr. Kang holds a B.S., economics with a concentration in finance, from the University of Pennsylvaniaand an M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency and Chief Residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
