Sherry A. Downie, PhD is Professor Emerita of Clinical Anatomy and Structural Biology and Professor of Clinical Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Dr. Downie earned her PhD in Cell Biology and Anatomy at New York Medical College and has been a highly regarded educator in residency, undergraduate medical, and allied health programs for 20 years. Her areas of expertise include human gross anatomy, medical microscopic anatomy, kinesiology and biomechanics. She has developed an array of 3-D, hands-on, and online teaching tools that help students visualize complex anatomical relationships and experience the core principles of kinesiology and human movement. She has authored the OnLine Dissector used in the dissection lab by Einstein’s first year medical students, and coauthored papers on human anatomical variation, anatomy of clinical procedures, and medical education. Dr. Downie is frequently invited to speak on functional human anatomy, especially the anatomy of movement. She has been a co-editor for the journal Clinical Anatomy, and is a reviewer for half a dozen anatomy and medical education journals. Dr. Downie has received multiple teaching awards including the Sister Gratia Maher Award for Teaching Excellence at Mercy College, the Certificate for Excellence in Teaching at New York Medical College (2000, 2004), and the Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Teaching Award (2007), the Harry Eagle Award for Outstanding Pre-Clerkship Teaching (2019) and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching (2021) from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA), has served on the AACA Council, and is currently chair of the Clinical Anatomical Terminology Committee of the AACA. She also participates in the International Association of Medical Science Educators and the American Association of Anatomists.
