Bioethics in clinical settingsDr. Powell is a bioethicist who specializes in public health disasters, bioethics consultation in the clinical setting and bioethics education. She directs the Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics, which coordinates bioethics consultation, education, and policy development at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, as well as a master’s degree program in bioethics being offered jointly by Einstein and Benjamin Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University.
Early in her career, Dr. Powell initiated the bioethics consultation service at Columbia University Medical Center and served as its director for several years. Later, she served as the executive director of the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, which functions as the state’s bioethics commission. She also co-chaired a New York State 2007 workgroup that devised ethical and clinical guidance for allocating ventilators in an influenza pandemic. She has served as ethicist on several Institute of Medicine projects and has provided bioethics expertise to other governmental and non-profit groups, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the New York State Cardiac Advisory Committee, and the Empire State Stem Cell Ethics Committee.
