Academic Tracks

Faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine are responsible for advancing the institution’s educational, research, and clinical missions. As a faculty member at Einstein, you are placed on one of several academic tracks to help guide your career path. These include investigator, physician-investigator, educator-clinician, research professor, staff scientist, and educator. Faculty with the designation of instructor are not assigned to an academic track.

Current faculty can access more detailed information about types of academic appointments on Einstein's intranet (AD credentials required). Investigator Track

Faculty on the investigator track are tenure-eligible assistant professors, associate professors, or professors in the basic or clinical sciences who spend a minimum of 75% of their time devoted to laboratory, clinical, or population-based research. Faculty on this track demonstrate a career commitment to scholarly pursuit and have significant publications, grant support, peer recognition for outstanding research, and have achieved national and international recognition for their research.

Physician–Investigator Track

Faculty on the physician–investigator track are tenure-eligible assistant professors, associate professors, or professors who maintain the highest quality of clinical practice or supervision of a clinical service and spend a minimum of 60% to 70% of their time devoted to laboratory, clinical, or population-based research. The academic output of faculty on this track is expected to be somewhat less than faculty on the investigator track due to their clinical responsibilities.

Educator–Clinician Track

Faculty on the educator–clinician track are nontenured assistant professors, associate professors, or professors who demonstrate excellence in teaching and clinical care and significantly contribute to the education of medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and/or house staff at Einstein and its affiliates through teaching, creating educational content, leading or organizing educational activities, and making significant contributions to patient care.

Research Professor Track

Faculty on the research professor track are nontenured assistant professors, associate professors, or professors who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to basic, preclinical, epidemiological, statistical, or clinical research in a supportive or fundamental role. Faculty on the research professor track contribute to the development and writing of research proposals and may be responsible for major research core facilities, essential research services, laboratory testing protocols, or field sites in a clinical research program. Individuals on this track may apply for grants but continue to work under the guidance of a principal investigator.

Staff Scientist Track

Staff scientists are nontenured faculty who have obtained a high degree of skill in research and play an important supportive role in the conduct and reporting of research. Staff scientists must have at a minimum a master's degree and may possess a doctoral degree. Individuals can be appointed to staff scientist or principal staff scientist roles on this track at the discretion of the department chair or be eligible for appointment or promotion to senior staff scientist, if approved by the Einstein’s committee on appointments and promotions.

Educator Track

Educators are nontenured faculty who demonstrate a high degree of skill in teaching and who play an important supportive role in Einstein’s educational mission. This includes the library's professional staff as well as nurses, social workers, genetic counselors, and physician assistants who are mainly involved in teaching. Educators must have at a minimum a master’s degree and may possess a doctoral degree. Individuals can be appointed as an educator or a principal educator on this track at the discretion of the department chair or be eligible for appointment or promotion to senior educator, if approved by Einstein’s committee on appointments and promotions.
