Appointment & Promotion Guidelines

Faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine can be appointed or promoted to junior rank or senior rank appointments within a specific academic track. Appointments and promotions are determined by the academic department chair and decisions about a faculty member’s path on a particular academic track are based on consultation between the department chair and the faculty member, followed by an endorsement from the department review committee. All faculty are classified according to academic status as full time, part time, or voluntary. There are also opportunities for visiting or adjunct faculty appointments.

Junior Rank Appointments & Promotions

At Einstein, junior rank appointments are determined by academic departments and are based on a candidate’s research, teaching, and clinical experience, as well as the nature and duration of postdoctoral training experience. Titles for junior rank faculty appointments include staff scientist, principal staff scientist, educator, principal educator, instructor, assistant professor, and research assistant professor. Faculty appointed to the role of instructor are not assigned to an academic track. Recommendations from department chairs for appointment or promotion to junior rank positions are reviewed by the Office of the Dean. Senior Rank Appointments & Promotions

Appointment or promotion to a senior rank faculty position requires review by Einstein’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions and is reserved for individuals who have made academic contributions of distinction. Senior faculty rank appointments consist of senior staff scientist, senior educator, associate professor, research associate professor, professor, and research professor. The ranks of senior staff scientist and senior educator are at a level comparable to associate professor. Upon approval and endorsement by the department, applications for senior rank faculty appointments are submitted to the Office of Academic Appointments and for institutional review by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions. In these cases, visiting senior faculty are limited to a one-year term, unless otherwise determined by Einstein’s committee on appointments and promotions.

Individuals with a faculty appointment at another medical school, who by virtue of their teaching or research activities, also fulfill the criteria for appointment to the Einstein faculty may be eligible for an adjunct faculty designation.
