John Blanchard Delivers 11th Marshall S. Horwitz, M.D., Prize Lecture

Eleven years ago, Einstein established the Marshall S. Horwitz, M.D., Faculty Prize for Research Excellence to carry forward the ideals and passion for scholarship of the prize’s namesake, who died in 2005 and, over four decades at Einstein, demonstrated his commitment to students, colleagues, patients and the College of Medicine. Held in Dr. Horwitz’ memory, the event celebrates the contributions of the award recipient with a lecture and award presentation that includes $5,000.

On Monday, March 20, 2017, Dr. John Blanchard, professor of biochemistry and Dan Danciger Chair in Biochemistry, shared highlights from his research career, studying enzymes essential to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), through his lecture, “Thirty-Seven Years of Science at Einstein: Failing to Achieve Irrelevance.” In accepting the award he also donated his prize to the Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences.

More than 150 members of the Einstein community gathered in Robbins Auditorium to hear Dr. Blanchard’s presentation and enjoy the reception that followed.

Among those in attendance were Dr. Susan Band Horwitz and her sons Bruce and Josh, as well as Marshall Horwitz’ sister Toba Hausner and her husband Tony. Dr. Vinayaka Prasad offered this year’s remembrance of Dr. Horwitz, and Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean presented Dr. Blanchard with his prize.

Editor’s Note: You can also view videos of Dr. Blanchard's "Salute to Women in Science" as well as his full lecture.
