BioSpec 70/20

The Bruker BioSpec 70/20 is a high-field 7 Tesla preclinical MRI system designed for small-animal imaging, providing advanced anatomical, functional, and molecular imaging capabilities.

The 7T Bruker MRI Scanner was acquired with support from the National Institutes of Health through an S10 Instrumentation Grant (NIH S10OD032183). Research conducted using this instrument should acknowledge the NIH S10 award in publications.

System Architecture & Magnet

The new 7T MRI features advanced imaging capabilities driven by cutting-edge hardware components:

  • Bruker’s AVANCE NEO MRI architecture: Provides ultimate performance and flexibility for multi-channel acquisition.
  • Zero helium boil-off technology: Ensures environmentally efficient and highly sustainable long-term operation.
  • 20 cm Bore Diameter: Accommodates optimal small animal preclinical subjects.
  • Stray Magnetic Fields: Limited to 1.5 m axially and radially, significantly increasing facility access space.
  • Gradient Performance (BGA 12S High Performance Gradient):
    • Standard Amplifiers: Enables imaging with 44 Gauss/cm with rise times of 127 ms.
    • High Power Gradient Amplifier: Reaches performance of 66 Gauss/cm with rise times of 144 ms. This unlocks cutting-edge Diffusion, Perfusion, and neurite orientation dispersion not previously attainable.

RF Coils & Parallel Imaging

Equipped with a rich selection of advanced multi-nuclear capabilities and specialized imaging coils:

  • Parallel Imaging: Features 2 TX and 4 RX channels (4 channels) supporting advanced GRAPPA MRI.
  • Non-Proton MRI: Full support for multi-nuclear Imaging and Spectroscopy (Fluorine 19, Phosphorus 31, Carbon 13, etc.) along with 1H Decoupling.
  • Bruker Integrated Imaging Coils:
    • Volume Transmit (TX) coils & Volume TX/RX coils.
    • Rat head / mouse body circularly polarized coils (60mm, 40mm, 23mm, 16 mm).
    • Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) Coil optimized for rats.
    • 4 Channel Parallel receive Coils specialized for rat/mouse head and mouse heart/body.
    • Rat and mouse brain surface RX coils (10 and 20 mm ID).
    • Proton/X nuclei coils, Surface Coil preamplifiers, and OEM coil interface.
  • Doty Coils: Includes high-sensitivity Doty Surface and brain volume coils.

Physiology Monitoring & Transport Systems

Integrated state-of-the-art life support and data gating technologies ensure precise small animal imaging sessions:

  • Body Temperature Conditioning System: Maintained precisely throughout the entire scan duration.
  • SAI Instruments Physiology Monitoring System:
    • Tracks Respiration, Cardiac rate, Pulse oximetry, Temperature, and EKG.
    • Supports advanced retrospective or prospective gating from any measured signal.
  • ManPac Animal Transport and Positioning System: Accommodates mice and rats while fully supporting integrated anesthesia delivery, physiological measurement routing, and precise anatomical positioning.
