The Neuromuscular Medicine Division of the Department of Neurology is dedicated to the expert clinical evaluation, care, and research of neuromuscular disorders, and the training of residents and fellows in this field. The last two decades have brought enormous advances in the diagnostic evaluation and management of many of these disorders, as well as an understanding of their molecular genetic basis. We provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient consultative services for adult and pediatric patients with neuromuscular disorders, along with ancillary studies including electrodiagnostic, neuroimaging and neuropathologic testing, through individual practitioners or in our Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic.
Neuromuscular disorders we diagnose and manage:
- Peripheral neuropathy - acquired and hereditary
- Entrapment neuropathy - carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and more uncommon entrapments
- Radiculopathy
- Plexopathy
- Nerve injury
- Disorders of peripheral nerve hyperexcitability
- Peripheral neurotoxicology
- Cranial neuropathy - facial palsy, trigeminal neuropathy, others
- Laryngeal voice disorders - diagnostic laryngeal electromyography (EMG)
- Motor neuron disorders - spinal muscular atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Kennedy disease, post-polio syndrome
- Neuromuscular junction disorders - myasthenia gravis, myasthenic syndrome, botulism, congenital myasthenic syndromes
- Myopathy - dystrophy, metabolic, congenital, mitochondrial, inflammatory, muscle membrane channelopathy, critical illness
- EMG-guided chemodenervation with botulinum toxin
- Movement disorders of peripheral origin
