Neelja Kumar, MD, earned her medical degree at Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education with Stonybrook Medical Center, New York. She completed her clinical fellowship in Nephrology at Yale School of Medicine, New Haven Connecticut. Tanya Johns, MD, MHS is an Associate Professor of Medicine and a Clinical Investigator in the Department of Medicine/ Division of Nephrology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Johns earned her medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University and completed Internal Medicine training at NY Presbyterian, where she was also an Assistant Chief Resident. Dr. Johns graduated from the Johns Hopkins Nephrology Fellowship with a Masters in Health Sciences in Clinical Epidemiology. <p class="MsoNormal">Thirty million people in the United States are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD). In patients with CKD, arterial calcification (pathological deposition of calcium phosphate salts into the arterial walls) is common, with a prevalence approaching 80%, and may contribute to their high cardiovascular mortality. The long-term goal of our research program is to understand the pathophysiology of arterial calcification and to develop new treatment strategies for it.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Our research program includes: 1) the role of calciprotein particles (CPPs) in the development of arterial calcification. CPPs are nanoparticles that are composed of calcium phosphate crystals and calcification inhibitors. They are thought to mediate the transport and clearance of excess calcium and phosphate in circulation. Using a new, microplate -based, dynamic light scattering assay, we measured both the size of secondary CPPs and transformation time and investigate the role of CPPs in arterial calcification using human vascular smooth muscle cells and CKD patient cohorts. 2) the role of cellular interaction in arterial calcification. Studying the paracrine signaling between endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells will help identify novel therapeutic targets that attenuate vascular calcification without adverse effects on bone mineralization.</p>

She came to Einstein for her internship and residency in internal medicine from 2008 to 2011, then continued at Einstein to complete a three-year nephrology fellowship as well as her Master of Science in clinical research methods in 2014.</p><p>Dr. Chen&rsquo;s research studies vascular calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease using bench-to-bedside translational approaches. She has shared her research through several peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, editorials, book chapters and regional, national and international presentations.</p><p>Dr. Chen is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and a member of several professional organizations including the American Heart Association, the North American Vascular Biology Organization and the Chinese American Society of Nephrology. <p>Enver Akalin, MD, earned his medical degree at Ege University School of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. He completed a research fellowship in the Renal Division at Brigham and Woman&rsquo;s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by a clinical fellowship in the Renal Division at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Akalin completed his residency in Internal Medicine as well as a clinical transplant nephrology fellowship in the Renal Division at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta.</p>
<p>After completing his fellowship, Dr. Akalin joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as a faculty in 2000 and served as the Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program until January 2009. He is currently the Medical Director of the Kidney Transplantation Program at Montefiore Medical Center /Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY and Professor of Medicine and Surgery.</p>
<p>Dr. Akalin&rsquo;s main research interest is understanding the mechanisms of allograft injury using microarrays and novel biomarkers. He is the first investigator who applied microarray technology in kidney transplant recipients which was published in 2001. Dr. Akalin received Young Investigator Travel Award of the American Society of Transplant Physicians twice and received American Society of Transplant Physicians Council&rsquo;s Faculty Grant in 2002 to continue his research related to mechanisms of chronic allograft injury. He has had involved in multiple NIH studies and has active multiple RO1 grants. He involved in more than 25 multicenter clinical trials as a site principal investigator. He has authored or co-authored more than 135 original scientific articles, review articles and book chapters. He had served on the Editorial Board of the Clinical Journal of The American Society of Nephrology and Transplantation. He is currently the Chief Section Editor of Frontiers in Transplantation. Dr. Akalin chaired the American Society of Transplantation, Transplantation and Immunology Research Network, Clinical Science Grant Review Committee.</p>
<p>Dr. Akalin other interest is education of nephrology and transplant nephrology fellows. He started transplant nephrology fellowship program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2006 and at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2011 and was the Transplant nephrology fellowship Director. He has served at Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Accreditation Committee for more than 10 years and chaired the Committee last 2 years. Later, he has served and chaired the governing board of Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Programs. Dr. Akalin has served as Abstract Review Committee Chairman/co-Chairman/Reviewer at American Transplant Congress, World Transplant Congress, The Transplant Society Congress and Annual American Society of Nephrology Meetings. He currently serves at Education Committee of the Transplantation Society and Medical Directors Task Force of American Society of Transplantation. He has served at Clinical Trials Committee and chaired the Fellow of American Society of Transplantation Committee.</p>
<p>Dr. Akalin served at the New York Society of Nephrology as Academic Program Chairman, Secretary/Treasurer, vice president and president between 2013 and 2017.</p>

Biography

Enver Akalin, MD, earned his medical degree at Ege University School of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. He completed a research fellowship in the Renal Division at Brigham and Woman's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by a clinical fellowship in the Renal Division at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Akalin completed his residency in Internal Medicine as well as a clinical transplant nephrology fellowship in the Renal Division at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr Akalin is a UNOS certified transplant nephrologist, and brings to Montefiore more than a decade of expertise in kidney and kidney-pancreas transplantation. Prior to joining Montefiore, Dr. Akalin served as the Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program and the Director of the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Akalin is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Nephrology. Dr. Akalin is a member of several societies, has served on the American Society of Transplantation Clinical Trials Committee and Renal Accreditation Committee, the American Society of Nephrology Transplant Advisory Group and the Medical Board of New York Organ Donor Network. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Clinical Journal of The American Society of Nephrology and Transplantation. Dr. Akalin has been the principle investigator in several trials and has written numerous articles on complex issues in kidney transplantation.
