Event Description
Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is a lifelong infection that can be passed congenitally if undiagnosed or untreated. It is vital we screen at-risk populations, as untreated Chagas can cause severe cardiomyopathy or gastrointestinal disease in approximately one third of affected individuals. Dr. Edwards, Professor of Pediatrics in the Infectious Disease Division at Baylor College of Medicine, is an expert in congenital Chagas disease and will bring her years of experience and knowledge to this session. During this session, she will share her knowledge about the importance of identifying Chagas in mothers and how to manage the infants of these mothers.
