Professional Interests
Dr. Amis has interests in both academic uroradiology and service to organized radiology at the national level.
Having trained in both urology and diagnostic radiology, and holding board certification in both specialties, he combined expertise in these two fields during his fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital 1980-81. He is co-author of Essentials of Uroradiology (Little Brown) and Textbook of Uroradiology (2nd and 3rd editions, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins). The fourth edition of this popular textbook is in press and will be released during the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North Ameria in November 2007. He has multiple publications in the peer reviewed literature, has served as president of the Society of Uroradiology, and is currently a fellow of the society. He is slated to be awarded the gold medal of the Society of Uroradiology at its annual meeting in February 2008.
Dr. Amis is the past President of the American College of Radiology, the socioeconomic and political organization representing over 30,000 radiologists in the United States. He completed a two year term as Chairman, Board of Chancellors of the ACR, and was a member of the Board of Chancellors for ten years. In May 2007 he was awarded the gold medal of the ACR.
Dr. Amis has served as chair of the Scientific Exhibits Committee of the Radiological Society of North America, and on the Executive Council of the American Roentgen Ray Society. In 2003 he began a six year term as a member of the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Diagnostic Radiology and is currently chair of the RRC.
Dr. Amis is interested in radiation dose and recently chaired a Blue Ribbon Panel on Radiation Dose in Medicine convened by the ACR. A white paper on radiation dose in medicine resulted from the deliberations of that panel, and was published in JACR in May 2007.
